'Mythologies'

curated by Ben Tufnell & James Putnam

Haunch of Venison, Burlington Gardens, London

12 March - 25 April, 2009

'Mythologies' takes as its starting point the previous incarnation of 6 Burlington Gardens as the Museum of Mankind between 1970 and 1998, when it housed the British Museum's ethnographic collections and staged exhibitions on subjects ranging from the Mexican Day of the Dead to Japanese Kites. 'Mythologies' has transformed the space into a giant Cabinet of Curiosities. Using dramatic design and lighting to evoke the mysterious and transformative atmospheres of collections such as the Pitt Rivers, Hunterian, Horniman and Sir John Soane's Museums, the exhibition features new works by some of the world's most renowned artists - Bill Viola, Sophie Calle, Tony Cragg, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov - alongside emerging figures such as Polly Morgan, Jamie Shovlin, Mikhael Subotzky and Jitish Kallat.

The artists in the exhibition were invited to consider the list of exhibitions held at the Museum of Mankind and a set of possible themes, and to respond to these. This process has thrown up a wide range of responses, reflecting on the original ambition of the Museum of Mankind to explain the world and its myriad cultures, from artists from all parts of the world - Europe, North and South America, Asia, India, Africa and the Middle East.

'Mythologies' has been organized by the Haunch of Venison exhibitions team, led by Ben Tufnell, in collaboration with the independent curator James Putnam.
